To prevent future failures, we took preventative measures by installing large filter driers with removable cores, which help clean out the system after flushing it with RX-11, a specialized HVAC cleaning agent.

Step 1: Preparing for Installation

Before replacing the compressors, we needed to ensure the supporting structure and piping were properly prepared. This involved:

Cutting a channel for mounting brackets – To securely install the new components, one of our team members cut a precise channel that would be used to mount brackets for the system. This ensured that all components would be properly supported and aligned, preventing unnecessary strain on the system.

Sanding and reaming the copper pipes – Before brazing, it’s essential to prepare the copper pipes to ensure proper bonding with the brazing rod. Sanding removes oxidation and contaminants, while reaming smooths the inner edges, allowing for a tighter, leak-free connection.

Bending copper pipe to create a 90-degree angle – Since the new filter driers had to be installed at a different angle than the previous setup, we carefully bent the copper pipes to a 90-degree angle. This adjustment allowed for a precise fit between the liquid line and the filter drier, ensuring optimal refrigerant flow.

Step 2: Installing the Liquid Line Filter Driers

After preparing the pipes, we moved on to the installation of the liquid line filter driers. These large filters play a crucial role in:

✅ Removing moisture and contaminants from the system
✅ Protecting the new compressors from debris or acid buildup
✅ Ensuring smooth refrigerant flow for optimal cooling

The installation process included:

Dry fitting the pipes into the new liquid line filter drier – Before making permanent connections, we did a dry fit to ensure that all pipes were correctly positioned. This step helped us visualize the final assembly and make any necessary adjustments before brazing.

Brazing in the liquid line and filter drier for the new compressor install – Once everything was properly aligned, we proceeded with brazing the liquid line and filter drier in place. Brazing is a high-temperature welding technique that ensures a strong, leak-proof seal in refrigeration and HVAC piping.

Step 3: System Cleanup & Monitoring

After successfully installing the new compressors and filter driers, we took additional steps to ensure that the system was completely clean and functioning optimally:

1️⃣ Flushing the system with RX-11 – Before running the new compressors, we performed a full system flush using RX-11, a non-toxic, non-flammable refrigerant cleaner that removes contaminants like acid, moisture, and oil buildup.

2️⃣ Vacuuming and leak testing – To confirm that all connections were sealed correctly, we performed a vacuum test to remove air and moisture and then conducted a pressure test to check for leaks.

3️⃣ Initial system startup & performance check – Once the system was pressurized, we powered it up and monitored pressures, temperatures, and compressor performance to ensure everything was working as expected.

4️⃣ Ongoing monitoring & filter drier core replacement – Since this system had experienced significant contamination from the failed compressors, we installed removable-core filter driers that would be replaced periodically to keep the refrigerant circuit clean. This extra precaution helps extend the lifespan of the new compressors and prevents premature failure.
